The creative design and development team was led by Kathryn Roberts, M.Ed., and C. Michael Levy, PhD.
The predecessor of Reading Buddy 2.0 was designed and developed by Kathryn Roberts, who crystallized her research into the fundamentals underlying reading English in her book, "Read and Spell: The 6 Hidden Codes--A Syllabics Reading Program. " That book provided a print-based reading program, requiring the teacher to work side-by-side with the student in every aspect of every exercise. Reading Buddy 2.0 recasts the teacher's approach with an interactive computer program that enables students to perform many exercises without adult assistance. Of course, in the beginning, the teacher's attention is still required for some exercises, particularly those that require the student to make an oral response whose accuracy the computer cannot readily determine.
Ms Roberts has taught beginning reading to children and adults for many years. She has also taught many foreign graduate students how to read English proficiently.
C. Michael Levy, PhD, is professor emeritus at the University of Florida, where his teaching and research focused on human cognitive functioning, particularly information processing, learning, memory, and writing. Dr. Levy was an innovator in the development of interactive tutorials for teaching complex concepts (such as those embodied in Reading Buddy 2.0) and has published 12 books and nearly 200 articles and book chapters.
